This Square next to the tall Soviet period building was the very city center of Mariupol since 1780 and was called “the Market Square”. The next year after Greeks came to Priazovia from Crimea they started to organize fairs here, which later on became a regular event. The main cathedral of Mariupol was also located here – St.Klarlampiy Cathedral. More than 30 meters high, with a huge 800-kilograms city clock on its tower was, unfortunately, destroyed by Sovites in 1938.
